good morning

Good morning Grace

Yesterday's pigtails, this morning's bread, spring sunshine... yep, that makes for a good morning.

Easter was busy, hectic, and perfect here.  Not much slowness and contemplation, which [I hear] is nice, but full, with some of my most dear people.  There was plenty of inspiration and rejuvenation of the very best kinds.

I am so glad to welcome spring.  We're really, really ready for it in so many ways.  I pretty much have garden on the brain, but beyond that, I am also craving some re-birth and re-invention in the manner of starting new hobbies and resurrecting old, of getting in touch with our food and prioritizing our time, of remembering my intent in each moment despite all the distractions.  We need fresh air.  We need a fresh start.  We need a little hope and some fresh courage.

So.  Welcome, Spring!  We are so happy to see you!  And we are setting out again, sun on our faces, hope in our hearts, plans in our heads...  We have seedlings in the window and blank sketchbooks in the car; the spring cleaning has begun and my toenails are painted; peas are in the ground and goals are on the calendar.  We are thinking new ideas and writing new lists of every kind.  It is shaping up to be a spectacular season.

Ah!  Good morning, indeed!

for cuteness sake

Pups 2 The bugs on the counter are gone, except for the caterpillar in his jar, waiting to become a hummingbird moth, and a very beautiful tiger moth whose wing was injured, which we mounted.  The new life and nature we are experiencing most now, are puppies.  Omigosh, these are the cutest ever!  Can we have five dogs?  Is there really anything wrong with that?

Orthoptera

I'll admit it right up front: these are not my photos.  I'm all in for the whole bug-catching thing, I am.  And I don't mind one bit that I have an entire collection of creepy/fascinating living things on my kitchen counter, right there where I chop my tomatoes and butter my toast, the praying mantis twisting its little head around watching every move I make, lick-lick-licking himself like a tiny, scheming cat....  No, I don't mind that one bit.  But I've got to draw the line somewhere, and a photoshoot with a grasshopper ready to spring, that's my somewhere.  I like a nice mason jar between me and my bugs.  You want wicked cool backyard bug photos?  Go visit Liz.  She's good like that.  Now that said, I give you the current residents of my kitchen counter (and yes, they have pet names):

We've got Hopper

And even Speckles

All on the kitchen counter.  Right now.  We have read a lot about latin names and thoraxes and orders and larvae and amazing diets...  Some of these little (big!) friends we will release after watching for an hour or a day or two.  Some, like our Baby Sphinx, we intend to keep for awhile.  Just yesterday we watched our caterpillar burrow down into his jar of earth to make his chrysalis cocoon.  We have put dark paper around the jar in hopes that he will settle right up against the glass.  We also watched Manty bite the head off a small grasshopper.  All very cool.

In closing, I have just two things to say:
1. Caterpillars make a lot of poop.
2. I am sort of glad autumn is upon us.  Bugs are soooo much smaller in the spring.

On the table tonight: More corn on the cob, garden tomatoes, squash, salad...and maybe our first canteloupe! Woo!

The Big Post about The Pink Sweater and other Crochet Stories

Pink_sweater_4

Most of my current projects are small ones.  I really don't have much time for making, but I also really, really need the dose of sanity that creativity provides.  The compromise is keeping projects small and portable.  Crochet and embroidery fit the bill nicely, and they have been getting an extra share of attention lately.  They are the perfect diversion at the end of a stressful day, keeping my hands and my mind busy as we wind down for the night.

Pink_sweater_1

This is my first ever finished crochet project. (Evan just reminded me it's not: "There's that dishcloth in the drawer!" Okay, thank you Evan. This is my second ever finished crochet project. I once made a dishcloth.) This little sweater and hat set was worked in 100% cotton yarn from my (small) stash; my own pattern, just done with single crochet, double crochet, treble crochet, and a lot of trying, pulling, and re-trying.  I am pretty happy.  Julia's pretty happy.  It's a happy project.  And that, my friends, has been a long time coming.  Crochet and I have a past.

Pink_sweater_3

I have been crocheting since I was a girl... When I was nine, I joined a 4-H club at my neighbors house.  It was a crochet club, and I was disappointed because two years earlier my older sisters had joined her 4-H group and she had done crafts; but I was too young to join that year, so there I was stuck with crochet.  We called ourselves The Chain Gang, and we had a chant when we went to 4-H summer camp that went something like, Hail, hail, the gang's all here!  I ended up liking crochet, except my mother kept telling me I was holding my yarn all wrong.  Apparently there is a very tricky, very complicated, very specialized way to hold yarn when you crochet.  I never could get it, and it very nearly made me give up crochet altogether.

Pink_sweater_2

Incorrect yarn-holding aside, I hung in, and that summer I almost finished my first project.  It was a small afghan made of strips (similar to one here) that I had very cleverly altered to be an infant sized sleeping bag.  (What a nine-year-old would do with an infant sized sleeping bag, I have no idea, but trust me, it was cool.)  I had most of the strips finished in a lovely combination of pink, orange, and white, when I learned the proper way to weave in the ends.  As it turns out, upon finishing a crochet piece, a person is to weave in the ends.  Never knot your yarn, and never, ever cut the thread, for it will surely unravel.  I, having knotted the end of each color change, AND having trimmed each knot as short as possible, was devastated.  What on earth was the point so finishing a project that was only destined to unravel?
I entered nothing in the fair that year.  It was a rather disappointing end to the whole 4-H experiment.

Unfinished_mint_baby_afghan

While I was expecting my first baby, I again tried crochet.  This time I knew about weaving in, and I was ready.  (After several hours of trying the specialized yarn-holding method, I did move to the plain yarn-holding method; sorry, mother.)  I never have been one to buy a pattern, so I just jumped in with an idea of a very simple afghan done all in single crochet with a pretty tricky (thought I) lattice section worked in, made with a tiny, size F hook.  The yarn I chose was a very delicate baby yarn in a sweet, pale shade of green which would be perfect for either a girl or a boy.  Tiny hook.  Very delicate baby yarn.  Lordy, I could have gestated for three years and never finished that bugger.  Almost twenty years later it still measures 13"x40" and it ain't getting any bigger.

Unfinished_giant_afghan

My third attempt at crochet came one long winter ten or twelve years ago, while spending time with my cousin.  She was working on an afghan in the Biggest. Loosest. Stitch. Ever.  It was worked entirely in treble crochet with TWO strands of heavyweight yarn, on a hook so big I could have hung my coat on it.  Perfect!

By the time it was one-eighth of the way done, I think it weighed about seventeen pounds.

After that, I made the dishcloth.

I have been tagged via email by the wise and talented Heidi (who has no blog) with the "Four Things" meme.  (Have you noticed you get the same meme in different "versions"?  I have received this in the past, so I married two.) the button I should pin on my coat

Bwored

(First of all, let me just say, it is high time I learned how to do some basic things like insert a button!  Sheesh!  Any tips would be appreciated.)

Ahem.

Can you imagine a button that would fit me better?  No, I couldn't either.  It has been my philosophy all along, but I felt I had to apologize for it.  Gosh, I feel so free now!  ;)

Actually, I love blogging.  Love it.  I love the fun of seeing my stuff on the screen, of sharing my photos, of being inspired just by the idea that I can show off a thing I made... Okay, those months I'm away?  Um, yeah, I am mentally composing posts over everything.  I even plan out the photo.  It's kind of embarrassing the way I am such a geek in my head -- And especially, I really really love those other bloggers out there who keep me drooling over their projects, admiring their talents, and even adoring their kids.  I really like these people.  I feel like I sort of know them, when all I did was peek in a tiny crack in their window (and probably into their tidiest room!).  But still.  Reading those crafty blogs, seriously, it's an addiction.  (In fact, I need to update that side bar, because that sidebar makes it appear that I have some amount of restraint...)  But, see, there's this little object of responsibility. Gads, blogging just does not fit as well as I'd like.  Of course, neither does exotic travel.  Or solo kayaking.  But I keep this little sucker.  It's even a "paid" blog, for pete's sake.  I paid for a year of inkstitch, faithfully, every month, even when I could find no time to blog.  Good grief.  My power bill does not get paid this faithfully.

But now I'm free.

If you're still here, thanks.  That's awfully patient of you.

(And thanks to tartx.)

not for lack of making things....

Baby_j_2

- have I been away.  In fact, every time I complete a project I mentally blog it.  But life can be a zoo sometimes...  Nevertheless, there are still so many wonderful blogs I read, and they keep me thinking in blogease, so, sporadic or not, here I am again...

time to put my money where my [belief] is

Walmartshoppers

I have just finished reading Randi's post about avoiding Wal-Mart.  It is a topic that has come up before, and it is one that most of us can't help but agree on: They are terrible, but I haven't managed to truly avoid them yet.

I, too, live in a small-ish town where options are few (due in no small part to Wal-Mart, who has forced many closures), but yet again today I was treated as a customer of non-importance during a Wal-Mart transaction after walking aisles of cheap junk and lesser-quality produce, and I left the store wondering how long I was going to be willing to accept all of that. I have made a great effort to do my Christmas shopping away from Wal-Mart, but each time that I do stop in (many of my groceries still come from there), I realize more surely that to shop there at all makes several negative statements:

"I don't mind being 'nothing' as a customer, and I expect zero customer service."
"I am okay with giving my business to a 'problem' rather than to members of my community who would truly value it and are actually working hard to earn it."
"I don't mind the actual cost of Wal-Mart and the stack-it-deep-sell-it-cheap mentality.  I am okay with the cost to the earth, the cost to humanity, the cost to the economy."
"I'm okay with mass market crap and over-licensing."
"I do not value quality."

Finally, I believe that to shop at Wal-Mart (using the excuses, as I do, of affordability and convenience), I am stating that I do not believe in abundance; that I feel my time and my money are finite resources that cannot grow to accomadate better usage of them.

Actually, this is not how I believe at all.  It is time for me to stop thinking about this and make a more sweeping commitment.

Alright, then.  Goodbye, Wal-Mart.  And good riddance!

I'm back to doing This

Yes, yes, we are still alive in the inkstitch house!  I never meant to be gone so long.  I did get a lovely new computer, but along with it came a job... oh, a job!  Well, not so much A Job, as, Taking in Work.  But a lot of work.  Much.  Of course, I had a job all along.  As much as I would have loved to be spending my time crafting and sewing and quilting, it has always been done in stolen moments.  Having seven children and taking on occasional freelance work can take a toll on the crafter's calendar.  But now, I am sunk.  Sucked in.  Swamped.

Etcetera.

Working from home, yes.  It sounds so simple, so domestic and forward thinking at once.  So harmonious.  (Insert wild, maniacal laughter.)  Nope.  It's merely insane.  Have I mentioned the number seven in here anywhere?

But!  I peeked in tonight.  One little glimpse through the windows.  I haven't spent time looking in sooo long, but I came looking for this, and quite happily I saw this.  And this.  And this ! !  And I just love this!  And gosh, just all of this.  Unfortunately, I had no time for this.

It is enough to inspire a girl... or at the very least make her long for things...

The sweetest thing I saw was this!

I must admit, I have been longing for some time for this.

Nevertheless, all is well in the inkstitch house, and while I can't possibly be around a LOT, and I am really excited to be back to doing this.

(Me, waving!)

so many small people

Shelfofbrides
Gosh, Tuesday already, where has the time gone?  What the heck?  Thursday!?!  When did that happen?  And when did it become March??

The week has flown.  Those slow and relaxing days off are distant memories.  I came home to many small people (and even almost-big people) who were extremely glad to see Mama and have yet to let go of my leg or quit talking my ear off, respectively.  It's nice to be home!

I have managed to start on this.  Just figuring out the pattern took me hours!  I have never tried this kind of picture-piecing before, so here goes.
Blockpattern

The "shelf of brides" (as 4yo son calls them) was found at an estate sale along the (beautiful!) drive between Portland and the Oregon coast.  They are 7yo daughter's souvenir.  Fantastic, no?  No other news here; it's all about catching up on laundry and catching up on my blog-reading!
